Newark, New Jersey
Newark is a city in the 862 area code, and Essex County, of which it is the county seat. With a population of nearly 280,000 people, it is the largest city in New Jersey.
Newark was founded in 1666, by a group of Connecticut Puritans who migrated from the New Haven Colony, after being forced out of its leadership in a power struggle.
Once it was established, and the Puritan theocracies that governed the early colonies were out of power, Newark began a period of rapid economic growth. Beginning in the 19th Century, Newark, along with many other cities in what is now the 862 area code, became an important base for heavy manufacturing, as well as processing of raw materials, such as iron.
By WWII, Newark had grown into the industrial powerhouse of its region. Just after the war, Newark’s population peaked at about 450,000 people. However, after the huge demand for industrial products spurred by WWII ended, many factories in Newark shut down, leaving thousands unemployed. This led to a period of economic stagnation that plagued many post-industrial cities.
However, in the 1990s, Newark, and other cities in the 862 area code, began to see an economic revitalization, as they transitioned into more service-based economies, which employer larger numbers of white-collar professionals, such as accountants, consultants, and lawyers. In fact, Newark is home to the headquarters of McCarter & English, one of the oldest and largest law firms in the United States, employing over 400 lawyers in 7 offices across the country.
Furthermore, several parts of Newark have been designated by the state of New Jersey as “urban enterprise zones.” These are areas deemed to be in particular need of economic stimulus, and if an area is designated so, businesses located there are subject to lower taxes, streamlined licensing procedures, and tax credits for hiring new employees. Shoppers are encouraged to spend their money there by a sales tax reduced from the statewide rate by half. Many industries, such as healthcare, telecommunications, and finance have a major presence in Newark, and elsewhere in the 862 area code. These industries are heavily regulated, so they have to employ or contract with large numbers of lawyers.
Newark is also home to several large law schools, including Rutgers University, and Seton Hall School of Law. These universities have produced many successful lawyers who practice in the 862 area code, and elsewhere in the country.
As a result of all of these factors, there are many lawyers in Newark, New Jersey who can handle virtually any type of case the average consumer is likely to face. In particular, Newark has an abundance of tax evasion lawyers experienced in dealing with the Internal Revenue Service.
